Latest Updates from Our Project:

Hey pretty cool!
almost 7 years ago – Wed, Jun 21, 2017 at 12:29:33 AM

$250,000. Not bad.

Thank you.

Thank you all so much for joining me on this wild ride. From beginning to end, each day exceeded my expectations. In the end we gathered more than 9,000 backers and surpassed a quarter million in funding. For any tabletop game, that is astounding. That this is a solo-only game is just impossible to believe. I hope this means we'll see more publishers creating solitaire games. Either way, thank you again.

What Happens Next?

There are a lot of backers for which this is their first backed Kickstarter project. Do not worry about addresses and order information. In a couple of weeks you'll receive an email that will collect information about your pledge (how many copies you pledged, if you got an expansion, etc); it will also let you submit address information. Until then, sit back and enjoy my random updates containing progress and stream of consciousness design talk. As for me, I've got tons of work to do.

The majority of game assets are ready (this is a reprint after all). I have to send my finished files off to a printer in China. They will manufacture the games, package and send them to distribution centers in various locations around the globe, and then those centers will deliver the game right to your doorstep. Then you can play the game forever and ever.

Okay, that's all for now. You're here for games, I can't wait to get them to you.

If you're interested in strolling down memory lane with me, keep reading. Otherwise, I'll catch you in the next update! Cheers!

All this talk about processes has me thinking back to those days of my first Kickstarter.

Let's look at some numbers (click to enlarge):

This chart shows the amount of backers and funding I received for each of my game projects. As you can see, the values from the reissue total more than all my past campaigns combined. My numbers may have changed but the commitment I have to delivering a special and unique gameplay experience remains the same. I wouldn't be writing this if it wasn't for the reputation I've been trying to build.

How did I get here? How did I go from packing each individual package by hand to using a global fulfillment system? I made a timeline!

So now you're all caught up. Let's have some more fun.

DSD-6: The Long Way Home
almost 7 years ago – Sat, Jun 17, 2017 at 10:50:42 AM

Hey Backers,

We're over $160k, 6000 backers, and over 800% funded! That's amazing. I've been working hard to create something special for the progress and I'm ready to preview it.

Deep Space D-6: The Long Way Home

The Long Way Home is a RPG-lite supplement for use with the Deep Space D-6 board game. The document will be made available exclusively to all backers free to download as a printer-friendly PDF. It is currently in the early stages of development, but I think it's coming along rather nicely. Have a look:

*All pages are currently works in progress and subject to change.

This supplement turns Deep Space D-6 into a unique light roleplaying game that uses the gameplay for combat resolution, and the familiar Choose Your Own Adventure format for the story.

The Game

A Long Way Home begins with your ship stranded in unknown space in the aftermath of the game's ambush. With limited fuel and a failing warp drive, you'll travel through the galaxy, explore strange new worlds, make difficult choices, and ultimately find your way home to the United Earths headquarters. A player sheet tracks your progress, provides ship upgrades, and outlines the traits of your unique crew.

Each turn, you'll decide where to travel, spending precious fuel to get there. Events and encounters outline the stipulations of combat. Occasionally, you'll be given a choice. These choices can be modified by your crew, skill checks, and previously made choices.

Combat typically involves fighting a fixed number of threats. Every location will have you starting combat against a fleet of threats. During combat, you can spend leftover crew to enhance your ship and prepare for obstacles further down the space road. However, don't linger around too long, as the mighty Ouroboros seems to have repaired itself and is it hot pursuit.

Integrating the expansion

Parts of your journey will require you to travel to unexplored regions- places where only rumors appear to make it out alive. These side quests are completely optional and require the expansion to play. Without the expansion, you will not be able to select the choices tied to the Endless.

Free Stickers!

All backers pledging at and above the $6 expansion tier will now receive a sticker sheet. This sheet will contain rule revisions to bring the 1st printing rulebook up to date with the 2nd printing. It will also include ship stickers (and possibly other non-game related stickers)!

Work in Progress
Work in Progress

Tim McBurnie is back to create more pieces of art. You can use these stickers on wooden discs or squares to create a player token for The Long Way Home, or just put them in cool places because spaceships are awesome and you'll have extra.

I'm excited to see what kind of stories you'll come up with in the Long Way Home. The PDF is currently scheduled to be available around the time the game is delivered, but I plan for it to be a living document so some roughness is to be expected as it matures. I'll do 'stable' releases for those that might be printer-shy.

If you have any questions about the TLWH, post them in the comments!

Finally some other notes:

The price of the metal dice from Javelin Dice will go up at the end of the campaign, so if you want them, I suggest you grab them now. http://javelindiceworks.bigcartel.com/product/deep-space-d6-anodized-aluminum-dice-set

I still get a ton of KS messages per day, so please be patient if you're trying to reach me. Also try to make the message not look like spam. It's becoming a serious issue for KS and makes it difficult for me to parse what's valid.

We broke $100,000!!!
almost 7 years ago – Fri, Jun 16, 2017 at 05:11:17 AM

I just want to say thanks to everyone for their support in this project. 100k in funding is a milestone for anyone, let alone single person doing this in his spare time. Back in 2013, I put together a small game that barely made its funding goal in literally the last 20 minutes of the campaign. Today, this project has absolutely eclipsed that one and I am especially grateful and overwhelmed.

I've got a few game variant announcements to make soon, but they aren't ready yet. I just wanted to say thanks.

1st printing vs. 2nd printing
almost 7 years ago – Fri, Jun 16, 2017 at 05:06:03 AM

Many of you have been asking: what are the differences between the first printing (the only currently available printing) and the second printing (the one that will come from this Kickstarter).

The following are the changes between the two version:

Revised Rulebook

The new rulebook contains extra card clarifications that were absent in the first printing rulebook.

Page 10, where it currently has a "Notes" page, three more special threats are listed:

Solar Winds - Place this card above all the external threats. It cannot be attacked.

Meteoroid - The effect occurs whether it destroyed itself or it was defeated.

Hijackers - You may complete this threat as an external threat or away mission.

Lastly, one more step is added to the setup page to help players who may have missed the text on the inside cover:

Page 1, Setup. Another bullet point is added to the list: Optionally: set up the Ouroboros final encounter (see inside cover).

PLEASE NOTE: Because the rule revisions represent minor clarifications, and because the ruleset is much larger than the expansion box, I will not be able to offer a revised rulebook as an add-on or include one with the expansion. A digital copy will be made available for free at a later date.

Additionally, I will offer stickers to those of you who wish to upgrade your 1st edition rulebooks. To keep fulfillment simple, these stickers will ship separately.

Hull and Shield tracker cubes

The component is slightly different. The corners are now rounded.

This is purely a manufacturing thing. It's what cubes are available.

Ouroboros Final Encounter Card Revisions

The Ouroboros was a late addition to Deep Space D-6 as a result of a last minute stretch goal. It was not able to be playtested as much as I would have liked. For the 2nd printing, I've rebalanced the Ouroboros set of cards to create a more rewarding and manageable final encounter.

  • Core - Destroying the core destroys the whole ship. No longer regenerates health. Instead, on a 6: Send a unit to the infirmary
  • Barrier - Now protects the entire Ouroboros. Health is now 2, down from 3. Ability remains unchanged.
  • Missile Array - No longer activates on 6
  • Hydra Cannons - Both of them no longer activate on 6
  • Attack Matrix - Remains unchanged

PLEASE NOTE: The expansion will come with cards to replace the affected Ouroboros cards from the first edition game. Meanwhile, the 2nd printing will include these in the base game from the start, therefore if you get the base game + expansion, you will have extra cards.

All revisions are subject to change.

Remember: If you are getting the game for the first time from this Kickstarter, there is nothing you have to do. You are getting the complete game with the latest rules and components.

Metal Dice are back!

A lot of backers have requested that I make the metal dice set available again. The metal dice from the first campaign was a collaboration with Javelin Dice. They have graciously agreed to manufacture more sets.

If you would like to pick up a set, head over to http://javelindiceworks.bigcartel.com/

Each set of metal dice includes six 16mm black anodized aluminum crew dice, one 16mm red threat die, and a metal Hull tracker cube to replace the plastic one included in the game. These are made to order and will actually ship in a few weeks- perfect to use with the print & play until the full game arrives.

Lastly, here are some awesome DSD-6 videos made by the board gaming community!

Two full playthroughs with two different ships!

Another unboxing! (shown with the limited edition first print sleeve)

For French backers, a playthrough of the print & play:

Yikes I can't believe we're already over 300% in funding and it's only been the first week! In the next update we'll go over each of the 4 ships with some tips on how to play them!

Funded!
almost 7 years ago – Mon, Jun 12, 2017 at 09:27:08 AM

We funded in less than 7 hours! That's the fastest one of my game projects have ever reached 100%. It warms my heart to know people are enjoying my game and even more people will be able to enjoy it.

It's funny. The thing that really made me seriously consider a reprint was this:

That is Deep Space D-6 at a used media store going for $50, more than triple as much as it was available for on the first Kickstarter. And then a good friend of mine tried to obtain a copy only to find listings online for $40- $50 used. I'm glad I saw that copy there, poised between an out-of-print expansion and an absolute classic game from 1983. I'm glad we're bringing Deep Space D-6 back. I'm glad you're all helping me.
